Is Asheville Open and Welcoming Visitors in 2026?

It’s been a year and a half since Hurricane Helene impacted Western North Carolina, and as we head into the busy spring and summer travel season, visitors planning their 2026 trips are asking: Is Asheville open for tourism? What sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway are open? and Is Lake Lure open to the public this year?

The good news: Western North Carolina is open, active, and ready for visitors. While a few areas are still rebuilding, the region’s most popular destinations, including downtown Asheville, hiking trails, scenic drives, and mountain towns, are welcoming travelers once again.

We have the answers to some commonly asked questions to help you plan your 2026 visit.

Key Takeaways

  • Downtown Asheville restaurants, shops, and downtown businesses are open and welcoming visitors.
  • Smaller mountain towns are still rebuilding. Visiting and supporting local businesses makes a real impact.
  • Most of the Blue Ridge Parkway is open, with a few sections under repair through 2026.
  • Lake Lure and Chimney Rock State Park are open, with full lake recreation expected by summer 2026.

Are Asheville restaurants, shops, and downtown businesses open?

Asheville is fully welcoming visitors, and the downtown area is buzzing with the same vibrant food and arts scene it’s always been known for. Popular restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, and boutiques are open, making Asheville one of the top travel destinations in North Carolina once again.

Areas like the River Arts District and Biltmore Village are still rebuilding in parts, but many businesses have reopened and continue to make steady progress. Visitors can still enjoy galleries, local shopping, and unique experiences throughout these neighborhoods, just on a temporarily lesser scale.

Are the Blue Ridge Parkway roads and hiking trails accessible?

Most of Western North Carolina’s roads, scenic byways, and hiking trails are fully open and accessible. Outdoor activities like hiking, waterfall chasing, and scenic drives are back to normal across much of the region.

A few sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway remain closed between Linville Falls and Mount Mitchell as Helene repairs continue, with reopening expected between summer and December 2026. In the Boone/Blowing Rock area, a couple sections will begin the final phase of work on a $100M+ project this spring, with completion expected in fall 2026. Visitors can still enjoy some of the best Blue Ridge Parkway views, overlooks, and trail access points that make this one of the most scenic drives in the United States. To make sure the section you want to travel is open for your visit, check on the National Park Service Road Status & Closures page.

Is there still hurricane damage in Asheville and surrounding areas?

In Asheville and surrounding high-traffic areas, recovery has been fast. Most debris has been cleared, infrastructure has been rebuilt, and the city looks and feels much like it did before the storm.

However, smaller mountain communities, including Barnardsville, Burnsville, Marshall, and Swannanoa, are still in the rebuilding phase. Visitors may notice ongoing construction and recovery efforts in these areas. If you’re visiting Western North Carolina in 2026, supporting these communities by shopping local, dining out, or booking stays nearby can make a meaningful impact.

Is Lake Lure open? What about Chimney Rock State Park?

Chimney Rock State Park is open daily, and many businesses in Chimney Rock Village are welcoming visitors back.

Access to Lake Lure is currently via NC-9, and while travel routes may be slightly different than before, the destination remains as scenic and worthwhile as ever. Lake Lure is on track for a full recreational reopening by Memorial Day weekend 2026, making it a top destination for summer travel in North Carolina.

Bottom Line

If you’re wondering if Western North Carolina is open for tourism in 2026, the answer is a clear yes. From downtown Asheville to the Blue Ridge Parkway, the region is open, scenic, and thriving again, with a new sense of resilience and growth.
